Little Hair Mistakes That Make A Big Difference

Little hair mistakes that make a big difference

We all want hair that feels soft, looks shiny and behaves itself, says Alison. But some of the things we do every day (often without realising) can quietly cause damage. From washing too often to skipping trims, small habits can have a big impact on how your hair looks and feels.

Here are a few common mistakes to watch out for 👇

Find your hair-wash sweet spot

Your scalp naturally produces oils that keep your hair healthy. Washing too often strips them away, leaving your hair dry and frizzy. But waiting too long between washes can cause buildup, greasiness and an itchy scalp.

Most people do best washing every 2-3 days, though curlier or coarser hair can often go longer. If your hair starts to feel heavy or look dull, it’s time.

Are your products letting you down?

If your hair still feels flat, greasy, or dry even after washing, your products might be the culprit. Many supermarket shampoos contain sulphates and harsh cleansers that can strip the hair, especially if it’s coloured.

Choose products that match your hair’s needs. For colour-treated hair, go for a gentle, colour-safe formula to reduce fading. If your fine hair feels flat switch to a lightweight conditioner and apply only to the mid-lengths and ends.

Not sure what’s best? Ask your stylist. We love helping you find the right fit.

Stop rubbing. Start patting.

We’ve all done it – that quick towel rub after a shower. But wet hair is fragile, and rough towel drying causes friction that leads to frizz, breakage and split ends.

Instead, gently pat out excess water, then wrap your hair in a microfibre towel or an old soft cotton T-shirt. It’ll absorb moisture without roughing up the hair cuticle or causing damage.

Wet hair rules

When your hair’s wet, it’s at its weakest. Tugging or brushing too hard can stretch and snap strands.

If your hair tangles easily, spritz on a detangling spray first. My go-to is hydrate quenching mist which adds a fabulous shine too. Start at the ends and work your way up using a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush.

Turn down the heat

Straighteners, curlers, blow-dryers… we love them. But high heat weakens hair over time, causing dryness and split ends.

Always use a heat protectant spray before styling – Sebastian trilliant suits most hair types and smells amazing. Turn tools down to a medium setting and, when you can, let your hair air-dry.

Loosen up

Constant ponytails, buns or braids put tension on the scalp causing breakage and even thinning along the hairline.

Use silk scrunchies or spiral hair ties instead of tight elastics. And if you love ponytails, keep it a little looser and vary where you tie your hair to give it a break.

Why skipping trims backfires

Avoiding trims won’t make your hair grow faster 😉. It just causes more split ends and breakage, leaving your hair frizzy and dull.

A quick trim every 6-8 weeks keeps your ends healthy and helps your hair look thicker and stronger as it grows.

Shield your hair from everyday damage

Sun exposure, pollution, chlorine and hard water can all fade colour and dry hair.

Before heading outdoors, spritz on a UV-protective spray – Bi-phase UV & Heat Protector is a great option that’s invisible and non-greasy. If you’re swimming, rinse your hair before getting in to reduce chlorine absorption, then wash with a shampoo formulated to remove chlorine.

A weekly hydrating mask helps too. Ask your stylist which one would suit your hair best.

Good hair days start with good habits

Healthy hair isn’t just about what happens in the salon – it’s about what you do every day. We’ve all been guilty of a few these habits, but small tweaks can completely change how your hair looks and feels.
